Luton Marathon Relays 2004

The club have been represented at this event for the past five years - last year entering three teams so it was a shame that this year we only managed one.
Rafat, Simon and myself went this year with the weather promising kinder conditions than last year. On arrival at the sports hall we saw none other other than Graham Darvill ! and would you believe it he was doing the full marathon, his first one (good choice Graham !) Unfortunately we didn't see him afterwards to ask how he got on.
We has drawn lots before the event and Rafat was the first off for us, after he got changed and we were discussing our prospects we bumped into another absent member in Andrew Gordon, he has been injured for sometime but was still hoping for a sub four hour run. Andrew stated the Hillingdon Half is back in February or March but I am sure he must have meant 2006
I was talking to Superman who is a 100 club member who has run just under 250 marathons, his mate was on 'only' 198 and expected to finish just under 6 hours!
As usual this race is very well organised and marshalled and this has been mentioned in previous reports. Rafat led us off with a brilliant run of 1:02:50 followed by Simon in 1:05:20, which left me to let the team down with 1:12:11 - a combined time of 3:20:21 when we were hoping for 3:15. I forgot just how tough a course this is - not hilly but definitely undulating !
We all decided we enjoyed this event - and the T-shirts were better than last year, we will be back next year - Lets hope with another team or two for company. (Gary Fiddes) |
