January

The New Year was kicked off in traditional style on a crisp sunny morning at the Hyde Park 10K, where Kay Tarrant apparently enjoyed the experience once she was persuaded to take her jacket off. On the following evening cold weather and an icy course failed  to prevent a good turnout in the Club 5K Handicap where Paul Evans broke his PB to win by a healthy margin.

Jack Nisbet was sole Club representative at the Middlesex County Cross-Country Championships in Cranford Park finishing 80th out of approx 110-120. Meanwhile in Metropolitan League the U13 Boys fielded a full team at Woodford, Jordan Eyre led the way followed by Daniel Watson, David Robinson and Thomas Robinson.

Jack Nisbet was in action again the following weekend winning the Dolphin Dash 10K in Uxbridge  with Peter Furness a close second. Jack celebrated a rare victory by jumping into the canal. This is the first (and possibly only) time we can report the Club has filled the top two positions in any race and the fact that this was a fairly low key fun run is not going to stop us making the most of it!

February

Jac Aldous finally remembered where she hid her form to steal the 5K Handicap trophy from a rapidly improving Gary Fiddes in a well supported race.

The U13 boys rounded off their cross country season in superb conditions at Welwyn Garden City with much improved performances although new recruit Atul Sanni did manage to get lost and finally broke cover through the bushes a good 15 minutes after the race had ended.

New member Nigel Jones made an impressive start in his first race for the Club finishing 3rd in the Bramley 10 mile race in 57 minutes. Mark Wright and Sophie Vine-Jones also chose to make their debuts at the same race. The marathon men were out in force in the 20 miler with Sam Shimakage wearing his new Club vest for the first time.

March

Keith Morris eased home to claim the final trophy of the 5K Handicap series, whilst Jan and Pam Stuart made impressive debuts in their first competitive event.

The U13 Boys finally showed their true potential in the Hyde Park YA 5K with several excellent individual performances. Jordan Eyre was 2nd and David Robinson 4th in the 13-14 age category, with Daniel Watson 4th in the 11-12 category.

Pam Stuart stepped up the pace in her preparation for the London Marathon finishing an impressive 361st in 2:49:37 in the four lap Worthing 20 which attracted more than 1000 entrants. Colin Aldous cruised round (and round and round and round) in 2:17:46 to finish 82nd.

April

Brian Matthews discovered that GRIM was an apt description for the "extreme XC event" held over a combined Army vehicle testing circuit and equestrian trial course near Aldershot.

Colin Aldous's thirteenth Marathon proved to be a lucky one when he finally broke the three hour barrier at the London Marathon beating his previous best by by nearly 3 ½ minutes to finish in 2:58:44. Meanwhile the boys cross-country team had a good day in the Mini Marathon with Daniel Watson giving the best performance to finish 23rd in the London Boroughs 11-12 category.

The women dominated a well supported first leg of the Summer Time Trials in Stockley Park. Jan Biles was 1st followed by Kay Tarrant and Liz Ioannou with Georgina Toucher 5th. Jim Ball salvaged some male pride with 4th

May

Despite being under strength, the Dream Team of Kay Robinson, Brian Skinner, Peter Furness, Kay Tarrant and Ian Robinson led from start to finish in the hotly contested H&HCA Quiz Night.

Any race that starts and finishes in a hole in the ground under the M4 can hardly be described as a Classic but the Concorde 10K always attracts a good turnout and this year we managed 15.  Liz Ioannou knocked a massive 14 minutes off last year's time to stake an early claim for the Club Championship

June

June proved to be a good month for the Club. Hayes and Harlington runners filled the first three men's places in the Stockley Park Arena 3 Mile race and first place in the women's. Meanwhile

in the  BA Ladies 5K Jac Aldous finished 7th overall  picking up the vet 35 prize, and the team which included Jacqui Howell and Georgina Toucher were placed 2nd.

Mark Tannian completed the Comrades Marathon in 8:50:40. This year's "UP" route from Durban to Pietermaritzburg was Mark's 15th consecutive Comrades, having run the 87km ultra race every year since 1987.

10 Hayes and Harlington Saga Louts travelled to Belgium for possibly the last ever Brugge Vets 10K. In typical style they managed to distinguish themselves on the road and then extinguish  themselves in the bar.

In the Time Trial Eddie Loughman was surprise winner in a hotly contested race, but a comfortable ninth by Jan Biles was enough to secure top place in the league table, meanwhile Matt Wilkins cruised into second place with just two events to go.

Our debut in the Runnymede Runners Relays will be remembered for the performances by Juniors Jordan Eyre, Thomas Robinson and David Robinson who did a magnificent job over the short legs. Mike Wenham also deserves mention for gallantly stepping in at the 11th hour. Mike's reward was a tough 5½ mile leg across the Windsor Alps.

July

Keith Morris discovered that daughters Katie and Lucy are natural born runners as they ignore his advice to take 1st and 2nd in the  St Anne's Heath School Under 10's 600m Race.

The sun made a rare appearance for the Picnic in the Park at Virginia Water. Two laps of the lake followed by a game of Rounders, a cucumber sandwich and four cans of Special Brew made for a splendid day.

Looking ever so slightly like Star Trek extras, Kay Tarrant, Peter Furness and Paul Evans took part in the Queen’s Jubilee Baton Relay with legs at Enfield and Carshalton.

August

Craig George made a rare appearance at our annual Target Zero event finishing the 4½ mile circuit within 3 seconds of his predicted time to win the annual watch-less event. Tom Nisbet got lost (again).

Pot hunters Jack Nisbet and Peter Furness were 1st and 2nd men with Jac Aldous 1st lady in the second races of the Stockley Park 3 mile race.

Just six short weeks since their now infamous trip to the Brugge Vets, the Saga Louts returned to Belgium for a seaside 10K near Ostend. The only surprise was that the Belgians let them back in the country.

September

5th place on the night was enough to secure the Time Trial Trophy for Matthew Wilkins with 104 points in the last event of the series. Jacqui Howell is a close second with Jan Biles third.

Suicide attempts, three hour traffic jams,  predatory females and an uncharacteristic 2:20 finish for Colin Aldous all made for a fun weekend at the Nottingham Half Marathon

The first Club Trailblazer run around Bushey Safari Park and the Thames towpath was enjoyed by a select few. Those that stayed away missed good scenery, good company and a close encounter with Bambi's nasty big brother. Next month we brave the deer of Richmond Park.

October

The 6 of October saw Club members in action at four events; Miguel Fernandez kept up the habit of H&HRR wins in the Stockley Park 3 despite taking a wrong turn. Meanwhile Jac Aldous finished second overall to make it a hat-trick of wins in the Ladies race picking up a series prize. Further a field Peter Furness and Colin Aldous both travelled to Kuala Lumpur for the  WARR 10K but struggled in the steamy conditions. Meanwhile Brian Matthews and Pam Swadling travelled east to Essex, the land of white stiletto's and boy racers, to run in the Southend 10K suggesting it should be the Club outing for 2003. Last but not least Mark Tannian finally discovered that the London to Brighton race doesn't finish at Gatwick with an impressive 9:10 finish.

The new Cross-Country season opened for the U15s who made their debut in the Chiltern League at Watford. A solid start leaves them in joint 6th place in Division II. Free tickets to the Watford Grimsby game made of a good day out.

We rounded off the month with the inaugural Hill Challenge event at the top of Keith Road. Miguel Fernandez and Jac Aldous winning their respective events to gain a pair of dodgy designer t-shirts from the Chairman.

November

A real comedy of errors at Luton allowed the U15s to slip to 7th in the Chiltern League Division II, but the Coach held up his hand and admitted responsibility for tactical errors.

The Club Championship was finally decided in the last event of the series. The cancellation of the Harrow Half Marathon resulted in Marlow being nominated as a substitute event despite its infamous hills. Clive Bonner's1:39:08 finish was enough to leapfrog Matt Wilkins and secure the trophy. Matt wasn't too despondent though as he ran into a Sven-less Ulrika ka ka Jonsson on the way home.

The Winter 5K Handicap series finally got going after being postponed due to long-term road works in Blyth Road. A rapidly improving Pam Swadling easily ran away with the first trophy.

The Hill Challenge changed location to the elevated section of the Hayes bypass but the long climb proved to be a bridge too far for most of the 20 that took part in atrocious conditions. Jack Nisbet and Julia Howard each won one of the now infamous t-shirts in a tough competition that demanded tactics, stamina and determination in equal measure.

The heavy going at Oxford gave the U15s Cross-Country team their best result of the season with the team finishing joint 4th on the day, closing the gap on Wycombe Phoenix and Queen's Park Harriers in Chiltern League Division II.

December

Matt Wilkins, Eddie Loughman and Miguel Fernandez broke the club record in the Luton Marathon Relays with 2:52:54 to finish 10th overall, while the Vets knocked 8 minutes off the previous best to finish 65th overall and 10th MV.

Julie Howard followed up her success the Hill Challenge with a comprehensive victory in the December 5K Handicap Race

Following the best ever turnout for the Silly Hats Run, Clive Bonner and Matt Wilkins were  presented with the Club Championship and Time Trial trophies respectively. Club Runner of the Year Mark Tannian missed his big moment due to a late shift at the Airport!

The annual trip to Cliveden was very wet and muddy but still the best way to end the year.
